Ever-Present Help In Trouble

Psalm 46:1“[Psalm 46] For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. According to alamoth. A song. God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”

Being a musician, writer, and artist myself, I love this, “a song”. The great thing about music back then, is that it was used as a catalyst, a way to keep up with the times, to hear the latest news and chatter, it was truthful. I love music and I appreciate many artists and genres, but to be honest, much of today’s “most popular” “artists” are really quite shameful and uninspired in comparison to song writers and music creators of old. I love hymns, and I’m not really talking about the sometimes monotone and repetitive melodies, no (although there are some nice melodies), I’m talking about the words. Hymns are so rich with theology, many based directly off of scripture. I love taking the words from old hymns and re-vamping the melody to make it something new and relevant while still holding to the absolute and unwavering truth of God. In many of those hymns it talks about God being our “Refuge and ever-present help in danger” or a “stronghold”, one comes to mind specifically, “A Mighty Fortress is Our God”. Okay, enough of the spiel, but take some time to think about how God has blessed you today and been your ever-present help not only in danger, but in joy, sorrow, pain, grief, monotonous days, etc. Coram Deo.

Accountable

James 5:16“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”

Something we miss so often in the Christian community, well in any community, is accountability. Since when did it become wrong or a hurtful thing to hold someone to their word or claimed convictions? Yes, it needs to be done in a loving and respectful way, let’s not miss that. However, we just brush over it all and say “oh everyone does it” and then don’t evoke action or change, we don’t encourage one another. If done in a loving and respectful manner, this can be one of the biggest catalysts for change in our personal lives, communities, and eventually, world.

What We Ask of Him

1 John 5:14-15“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.”

This passage so often is taken out of context and twisted to say that whatever we ask of God in confidence we will be given. Missing one large part though, “according to HIS WILL”. Here’s a cool thought, the more we seek God and dig into Him, the more our hearts will be aligned with His and want what He wants, and therefore what we ask WILL (for the most part) be according to His will and will come to pass. Mind you it may look different than expected, but one of the coolest things about God, is that He’s God…His ways are not our ways and His thoughts are not our thoughts.

Faith=Belief that something is True

Hebrews 11:6“And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”

Interesting that people say they have “faith” but don’t believe God is who He says He is, at all times, in all ways. We don’t truly have faith if we don’t truly believe God, now let me make it clear, it’s not wrong to question, God can handle all the questions you got, take Lee Strobel for example, devout atheist who searched and studied and wrestled with questions and with God, and finally came to a point where he personally thought himself foolish if he did not believe in God, and to believe in God, it takes faith. There will be an element of everything that will take faith to completely believe and for us to believe they are true. There is not a thing in the world that without at least an element of faith can be completely trusted by our human minds and hearts because we don’t know everything and even the most brilliant of minds are limited in wisdom and knowledge. Sometimes we need to stop complicating everything and have faith like a child.

Speak the TRUTH in LOVE

Ephesians 4:15“Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.”

This verse is SO important to us as believers today. So many times if one of us is stumbling, others around us either don’t address it at all, brushing it off, or when they do address it they sugar coat it and say, “oh everyone struggles with that”. Yes it’s good to relate, but when we leave it at ‘relating’ and don’t push or spur each other on towards Christ and towards change, then those stumbling will just be caught in the ugly cycle again and again and again. When we speak the truth in LOVE and NOT condemnation, there is respect in that, respect for the other person saying, “I love you so much that I can’t let you stay in this cycle” and I don’t know about you, but I would hope someone would do the same for me. It might sting at the moment, but I would rather someone put stinging, healing medicine on my wound rather than let it sit and leave a scar later.

Ever Interceding

Hebrews 7:25“Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.”

I LOVE that part….read it again, “because he ALWAYS lives to intercede for THEM”. Whoever goes to God through Christ has Christ interceding on THEIR behalf…not just their family’s or their church’s or their friend’s…theirs. How awesome is that?! We have a personal Savior who passionately loves us. Yes.

Redeemed

1 Corinthians 15:20-22

“But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.”

Isn't it so cool that though man brought death upon himself, God loves us so passionately and unabashedly that He sent Christ as a man to redeem man. He could have just redeemed us, but He showed us that anything can be redeemed, so He sent Christ as man. So cool!

Never Go To Bed Angry

Romans 13:8“[Love Fulfills the Law] Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.”

The phrase, “never go to bed angry” which comes from the scripture, “never let the sun go down on your anger” is more than just a ‘penny for your thoughts’ phrase, it is truth. As humans we love to sit in our anger, for some it gives them the feeling a power, strength, control, for others it gives them reasons to be pitied, they feel justified in their anger or resentment or bitterness. It is okay for appropriate grieving and such, however we must NOT sit in our anger, that will not get anyone anywhere except straight down the slippery slope to nowhere good. There is power in forgiveness, anyone can sit in their anger and let it control them (though many think they are controlling it), however, it takes so much more grace, strength, and love to forgive, but in it, there is so much more freedom. If you don’t take anything else I say, take this, in forgiveness there is freedom, trust me, better yet, trust God.

By His Wounds

1 Peter 2:24““He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.””

By HIS wounds WE are HEALED. I think sometimes we wallow too much in our own wounds…we never let the grace of God heal them, we want to sit in them for the sake of pity, anger, attention, bitterness, selfishness, feelings…etc. Now don’t get this confused with appropriate grieving or things of the sort, but we all too often get caught in the “woe is me” bubble and many times bring others down with us, sadly we bring the name of Christ down with us as well. He sacrificed everything for us, He healed us, let’s focus on Him, and give Him praise.

We Would Like to Say We Wouldn’t Be Pharisees

Isaiah 53:3-4“He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem. Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted.”

I think we would all like to say we wouldn’t be Pharisees if we were in Jesus’ day, however, sadly, most of the “Christian” population and just the world’s population in general would be wrong, would reject Christ. Interesting thought, well truth, Jesus wasn’t like the Jesus we saw on flannel graph as small children, or even here about from televangelists, etc. He was the son of woman who was pregnant out of wedlock (didn’t fly well back then, if Joseph hadn’t been a man of God, she could’ve been killed) and well, He was just different. As an adult of course He did those miracles we all heard about, but He did so much more too! He ate with the sinners, talked with the lowly, the poor, to put it in relevant terms, he had dinner with the “johns” and prostitutes and showed them love in a different way than anyone had, through His Father. We depict Him as blue eyed and soft featured, when really, he was most likely brown eyes, probably some scraggily brown hair, beard, etc. All to say, if you haven’t read it already, you should check out Phillip Yancey’s “The Jesus I Never Knew”. And yeah, if we saw him back then, if we were honest, we would probably have rejected him as well sadly. He loved everyone, yet most rejected Him.

Ransom

1 Timothy 2:5-6“For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time.”

God’s one and only Son gave Himself as our ransom. We were in prison, ready to be killed, we were on death row, sentenced for life…Christ came and said, “I love you so much, I will take your punishment for you, go, be free, and tell everyone of who I am and how I love”. Did we, do we deserve that? NO. Think on that.

Suffer with Christ

Philippians 1:29“For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him,”

SUFFER? Are you kidding?! oh yeah, great, we’re called to be miserable. Whoa-HOLD UP-did we miss something? like the part where God gave up his FAMILY (son) for us and how Christ left EVERYTHING to save our grimy selves, and not only us or our generation, but the ENTIRE population past, present, and future. He took the sins of us all, all at one time. He took all of the murders, abortions, lies, adulterous relationships, etc. etc. ALL of the sins of ALL of mankind of ALL time. And here we are, barely willing to give Him a moment of our time during the day to be in His Word and in communion with Him?! oish, HE CREATED TIME! He blesses us beyond belief and gives us big and little blessings everyday, we most of the time pass them by and don’t even recognize them. He is patient with us daily and we complain when He calls us to do stuff out of our comfort zone. No matter how much we suffer here, is it nothing close to how much Christ suffered for us because He loves us. It is a joy and honor to suffer for Christ and even though we don’t deserve it, he will bless us for it. He’s pretty amazing like that :)

Take A Stand!

Ephesians 6:10-11“[The Armor of God] Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.”

I think as believers today we forget that we are in a spiritual battle, warfare. YES, this journey and life IS going to be HARD, buuuut, the more we fight, the more we align with God, the more joy we will be filled with. So, we must FIGHT.

Trust in the Lord

Jeremiah 17:7-8““But blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.””

Trust in the Lord! Though it is one of those “easier said than done” however, that’s why it’s a battle, a war. Last time I checked, there hasn’t been a war or battle that was easy or without some cost…otherwise it wouldn’t be war. We have to FIGHT! God deserves our EVERYTHING yet we give Him next to nothing. How is that fair? it’s not…we’re just cheating Him big time. So, pals, lets do our best to encourage one another and strive towards Christ, which starts with being in His Word and in prayer with Him. Our trust will grow over time, and then, the more we trust Him and are rooted in His Word, the harder it is to bring us down or quiet our hope filled hearts.

Called to Holiness by Grace

2 Timothy 1:9“He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time,”

Isn’t it amazing that imperfect rather horrid and awful scum like us humans can be completely redeemed and changed by a God who sees everything we do, say, think, feel…etc. and still loves us intimately and desires us anyway?! Crazy…but completely and utterly amazing. THAT is a miracle.

Those prayer requests we feel are going unanswered or those situations which seem so unclear and uncertain, well though we may not take it as much, we can rest assured in the fact that our great God, in His sovereignty and faithfulness already knows the outcome and is already working each situation out for HIS glory which is ultimately for our BEST.
